“Becoming an Empowered Mentor and Sponsor for your Mentee”

April 16, 2013
The American Heritage Dictionary the word mentor Means a wise and trusted counselor or teacher or to serve as a trusted counselor or teacher, especially in occupational settings.
·      Promise Yourself as a mentor to:
1. Be strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind
2. Enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own
3. Be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the press of trouble
·      Duties of a Mentor:
1. To Guide
2. To Direct
3. To Influence
4. To Create a Path
5. To show the way
6. To Cause progress
· Six Ways to Bring out the Best in People
1. Keep courtesy and consideration for others foremost in your mind
2. Try to have fun without trying to be funny
3. While you can¹t control what happens to you, you can control how you react. Make good manners an automatic reaction
4. Seek individual opportunities to offer a genuine compliment
5. Remember that sincerity, optimism, and enthusiasm are more welcome than sarcasm, pessimism, and laziness
6. Laugh with others, never at them
· Mentors help mentee think through a complex career decision – remember the path as a career lattice instead of a career ladder. Think broadly with no limits
· Mentors raise the performance standard as needed and recognize those who exceed the standard. Mentors through their role as Sponsor go to bat for their mentees.
· 10 Steps to a Successful Partnership
1. Make your partner a priority, treat them like your best customer
2. Schedule frequent meetings meet at least one to three hour per month and try to stick to the schedule, working around vacations and travel plans
3. Meet face-to-face as much as you can. Get together out of the office setting over lunch, dinner, or at an inspiring location like a museum.
4. Show up prepared and on time to every meeting
5. Be open and honest
6. Set Goals
7. Take risks
8. Attend each other¹s meeting or presentations to see each other in action
9. Network with other mentoring partnerships to compare notes.
10. Own the mentoring process from start to finish
Mentoring is and is not:
· Mentoring is:
1. Sharing knowledge
2. Focusing on development
3. Learning to value different perspectives
4. Define goals, roles, expectations, and time frames clearly
5. Affording an opportunity to: enhance skill sets; expand networks; gain career perspective
·      Mentoring is NOT:
1. Sponsorship
2. Tied to advancement or promotion
3. Remedial
4. The same as managing
5. A replacement for the manger¹s role as performance coach

Nadine O. Vogel
The issue of PwD in the workforce/workplace, although becoming a bigger compliance issue has really become a business imperative. This segment is now the largest and fastest growing minority in the world, in the US, surpassing the Hispanic population by 5 percent. Recent legislative changes are requiring Corporate America to learn how to appropriately and effectively recruit and retain this very large, loyal segment of the population.
